Hani: My colleague, dear friend, and co-author on this website, Deborah Innocent, will be co-hosting a complimentary Senior Day Forum on December 1, 2022, from 12 PM to 3 PM at Restoration Plaza, 1368 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, New York, 11216. The other hosts are Dr. Kim Best and Michael Catlyn of Community Board #3, and the NYPD 79th Precinct. The event will be packed with professionals who work with the elderly and are going to provide useful tips. Here is the flyer for this informative event:
Deborah: On Thursday, I will discuss the Medicaid look back rules in New York and how they are changing for community Medicaid for home care services. Seniors have a window of opportunity to transfer assets before the new community Medicaid look back rules are expected to take effect sometime in 2024.
Other professionals will be presenting. They work with me in assisting seniors.
Kerry D. Archer, Esq., Partner at Douglass Rademacher LLP, will discuss Surrogate's Court practice. She is a Partner in a firm that focuses on trusts and estates and Surrogate's Court litigation. If my clients have any issues dealing with estate litigation, I can refer them to Kerry.
Sarah Grimes, Outreach Director at NYSARC Trust Services, is coming from Albany, New York, to explain the use of Income Pooled Trusts. When my clients need to qualify for Medicaid and their income threshold is too high--which is the case for the majority of them--we use NYSARC, which has been assisting seniors and people with disabilities for 50 years. They are well-known and efficient. Sarah is coming down from Albany to personally be at this event.
We also have other attorneys that deal with real property. Andrew G. Neal, Esq. will talk about real estate fraud, and how the elderly, who are particularly vulnerable to this type of fraud, can spot some of its signs. Andrea S. Gross, Esq., from The Law Offices of Andrea Gross, will discuss foreclosure prevention.
Chantal Joseph, CLTC, from NewRoc Financial, LLC, will discuss life insurance and long-term care insurance. Shana Heath, from Shana Heath Agency/SAJ Heritage Group, also deals with life insurance and long-term care insurance, but she will present on investments for retirement.
Since I practice real estate, I work with Yvette Aiken, a Senior Underwriter at and Owner of Dyamond Capital. She provides loans to many of my private investors. There are many misconceptions surrounding reverse mortgages because many seniors are exploited, but there are good ways to use reverse mortgages. For example, if your property is in a trust and you now need money, you can do a reverse mortgage to maintain the assets. Yvette will also speak about something that is more common in the South: Mortgage insurance. An elderly person can get mortgage insurance, so after they pass away, their house can pass mortgage free.
Dr. Tamara F. Moise, D.O., is a very close friend of mine. She opened up one of the first urgent cares in the Haitian community with her partner, Dr. Wadson Fils, PA. Now, they are under NAO*Medical. They have many health tips for the elderly. Also, Dr. Adedolapo Olurinde, the Director at Rehoboth Care, Inc., will be talking about safety tips for seniors at home--such as things the elderly can do to minimize their risk of falling at home.
RB the Realtor will discuss downsizing for seniors and transitioning into a senior condo or senior living.
Police Officer Christopher Charles from NYPD 79th Precinct, which is also hosting this event, will talk about safety tips on the street for elderly people.
The NYC Department for the Aging, Emblem Health, and VNS Health will also be there.
I'm very grateful for the organizations that have sponsored this forum, including Healing Hearts Chaplaincy, L'Abapec, Prince Center for Visually Impaired, Providence Home Care Services, NYSARC, VNS Health, Emblem, Rehoboth Care Inc., NYC Department for the Aging, and NFL Alumni NJ Chapter. Some of these sponsors will have informational tables at the event.
